How Mother Figures Impact Our Lives
  + stars: | 2024-05-09 | by ( Catherine Pearson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +13 min
For Mother’s Day, The Times asked readers to tell us about the mother figures in their lives. KELLY SANDOVAL, 48, SQUAMISH, B.C., CANADAI come from a multicultural background, but the Puerto Rican side of the family lived far away. When I showed up, Linda, my host mother, picked me up from the bus stop and made me tea and crumpets. If I had a nightmare and woke my mother up, she would tell me to climb into bed with Rita. During that year I also moved into my first apartment, away from the guidance of my mother.

Some get diagnosed after finding it especially difficult to parent with ADHD symptoms — something Philipps related to. Philipps was previously diagnosed with ADHD as a childPhilipps said she was first diagnosed with ADHD when she was about seven or eight years old. Like many women diagnosed with ADHD, Philipps had more inattentive symptoms than hyperactive ones — a contributing factor to women often being underdiagnosed or diagnosed later in life compared to men. She manages ADHD symptoms with medication and a few hacksPhilipps takes Qelbree, a non-stimulant ADHD medication, which she recently partnered with. AdvertisementThe ADHD diagnosis brought clarity and helped her stop being so hard on herself.

Hanging Out in the Boiler Room With Andre Dubus III
  + stars: | 2024-03-12 | by ( Steven Kurutz | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The cedar-shingled house that Andre Dubus III built for his family in the seaside town of Newbury, Mass., has four levels that sprawl across 6,000 square feet, with plenty of rooms that could have made a nice writer’s office. But Mr. Dubus plies his trade down in the mechanical room, near the exercise equipment and the boiler, in a lofted space that he built himself out of plywood. There is a window, but Mr. Dubus has covered it with a blanket to block out the daylight. Writing longhand with a pencil and paper, he has produced five books in this cramped space. He refers to it variously as “my writing cave,” “my dream portal” and “the engine house.”

Long before Alexis Wright was a towering figure in Australian letters, she took notes during community meetings in remote outback towns. Put to task by Aboriginal elders, her job was to take down their every word in longhand. The work was laborious, and it soothed her youthful fervor for the change that seemed all too slow to arrive. “It was good training, in a way,” she said in a recent interview at a public library close to the University of Melbourne, where until 2022 she held the role of Boisbouvier Chair in Australian Literature. “They were teaching you to listen, and they were teaching you patience.”Wright, 73, is arguably the most important Aboriginal Australian — or simply Australian — writer alive today.

It is the ideal way to celebrate the musician and civil rights activist, and the ideal gift for a music fan of any walk. Cost: $135SAY CHEESE: This one might give an audiophile a heart attack, but that doesn't make it any less adorable. The “Turntable Cheese Board" from Uncommon Goods is exactly what it sounds like — a cheese board designed to look like the most expensive, slick turntable, featuring a slate platter and hidden slicer in the one arm. Cost: $78HEAR IT LOUD: There's never a wrong time to upgrade headphones — in fact, it makes for a great gift. MY NAME IS BARBRA, by Barbra StreisandHello, enormous. Of course Barbra Streisand’s memoir, 10 years in the making if you don’t count the chapter she scribbled in longhand in the 1990s and then lost, was going to approach “Power Broker” proportions. For one thing, she is — fits of insecurity notwithstanding — a bona fide power broker: tearing down barriers to and between Broadway, Hollywood, the recording industry and Washington, D.C., like Robert Moses on a demolition bender. For another, as Streisand writes in “My Name Is Barbra,” a 970-page victory lap past all who ever doubted, diminished or dissed her, with lingering high fives for the many supporters, she does tend to agonize over the editing process. After adding back material to her version of “A Star Is Born” for Netflix in 2018 — “I think I made it better.

Bestselling author James Patterson's first book published 47 years ago — and his hustle hasn't stopped since then. Patterson pointed to a piece of guiding advice from his grandmother that helps illuminate the drive behind his work ethic. Typically, Patterson writes an initial 50- to 70-page outline for a story before encouraging his co-writers to start filling in the gaps with sentences, paragraphs and chapters, he said. As for the writing itself, Patterson writes longhand, with an assistant transcribing his handwriting into typed drafts, he said.
